Shutdown App delivers execution excellence

The Customer

Our client, located in the South-western Pacific, is a leading open pit gold miner and ASX Top 100 listed organisation. The site has a reserve base of 310mt, an estimated operational life of 20 years, and is stabilising its throughput at the 15mtpa annual target.

The Situation

Historically, the site experienced a number of obstacles during its shutdown events, leading to increased business risks, including not meeting production targets and project overruns.

In particular, the organisation’s manual paper-based system made it hard to collect, report, interpret, and act on data. Supervisors could spend 20 minutes walking from the field to the office to provide progress updates. These delays, inefficiencies, and lack of overall progress visibility, negatively affected decision making and project outcomes.

The leadership team chose to use IMMS mobile technology to speed up and streamline the flow of information, improve on-the-ground thinking, and support their in-field team to execute shutdowns more effectively and safely.

As part of implementing an end-to-end digital shutdown management platform, IMMS deployed its mobile solution, across iOS and android, to improve visibility and make timely project decision-making a reality.

The Solution

  • Replaced a paper-based system with an innovative digital solution, eliminating lost paperwork and fast tracking progress updates.
  • Implemented SMSi’s end-to-end digital solution in conjunction with its mobile app, SMSi Supervision Plus, to empower office and field workers alike.
  • Utilised mobile devices so supervisors could see and act on work specified in the real-time Gantt schedule. With information at their fingertips, supervisors stayed in the field longer and focused on higher-value work.
  • Accelerated management decision making with easy-to-use dashboards. Critical information was made available quickly rather than waiting for hours.
  • Remote off-site schedulers accessed data via SMSi to review, validate, and reschedule activities as required.
  • Informed all team members via reports to track and respond to delays, cancelled, and emergent works.
  • Operated offline when Wi-Fi connectivity failed without interruption or data loss. Information was automatically uploaded to the cloud when the connection was restored.
  • Provided S-curve, finish forecasts, and shift-based productivity reports.
  • Trained supervisors to the required standard in less than one hour.

The Results

  • Captured 200 updates per shift for 30 days across 15 supervisors, providing accurate and real-time information and fast-tracked decision-making.
  • Enabled schedulers to login in from anywhere around the globe, minimising the effects of the skills shortage and saving thousands of dollars on mobilisation and travel costs.
  • Developed robust processes for future events based on lessons learned, improving planning, scheduling, safety, and the utilisation of resources, including cranes.
  • Team members and contractors quickly adopted the easy-to-use app ensuring a sustainable and ‘go to’ solution for future events.
