SMSi Supervision+ helps Supervisors to Capture Delays

Challenge
Capturing and reporting delays are important activities during the course of a shutdown operation. Shutdown leaders need to identify a constraint and reallocate resources or change priorities. Without timely delays reporting delays may impact the critical path and a challenge to keep the shutdown on track for scheduled ramp-up.

Solution
Supervisors using SMSi Supervision+, can select, record, and report a delay associated with each task at any place and time.
Supervisors, using the mobile can select ‘delay cause’, allocate duration, and inform a reason for it. Delay data will be streamlined into the SMSi platform. Realtime data is available to schedulers and shutdown leaders and they can look at overall delays and decide what area requires attention.

SMSi Supervision Plus APP Release

SMSi Supervision Plus is an addition to SMSi system. It brings all your shutdowns, turnarounds, and projects within the SMSi system into the palm of your hand.

Shutdown supervisors can use the App to update work progress, capture delays, register incidents, and add their comments.

The App helps supervisors to be more productive. They remain in the field and submit their updates via App. No need to walk or drive back to the office to provide updates anymore! No risk of losing data because it was written on a torn piece of paper!

Ultimately, STO Management gains further visibility and control over the execution of the shutdowns, turnarounds, or projects.

Here is what you will love about this App:

  • Access to all shutdowns, outages, and projects in your App
  • Go through the list of STOs to quickly select your shutdown
  • Go through your bucket of work, open your first job, and start updating progress
  • Select delays from a pull-down menu as they occur
  • Register any incidents or injuries as they occur in the field
  • Add notes and easily share them with your teams
  • It’s that simple! And now STO teams will have visibility over progress … thanks to you!

SMSi Professional Edition: Released and ready for the field

It’s just few days into a shutdown, the Gantt document is torn and falling apart.

Documenting progress updates and capturing delays has turned into a messy exercise

Providing feedback to schedulers is a challenge as time-poor shutdown schedulers struggle to step away from their computers and see the shutdown in action

Nevertheless, shutdown leadership is waiting for all the shutdown updates and insights.

At the end of the day, we all need to know where the shutdown is at so we can make sure we’re on track for ramp up without delays or schedule creep

I recall my time in the field as a young engineer, and later as a STO superintendent, right in the middle of it.

One thing I’m certain of; the challenges have never changed when it comes to managing execution.

You might be surprised, or perhaps relieved, to know it doesn’t have to be this way for managing shutdown turnaround and outage any longer.

Shutdown Turnaround and Outage Best Practice

Tracking progress, updating the Gantt, capturing delays and safety incidents, and managing reporting process to have visibility over shutdown execution doesn’t have to be a messy piece of work.

We – at IMMS – have experienced this challenge firsthand and we decided to develop a solution for it; our first generation – SMSi Professional Edition or PRO – is now live and fully available.

SMSi Pro tracks your shutdown progress through an iPad that your Shutdown Supervisors and Coordinators can carry with them on site. This means we can update progress and capture delays in real time and provide seamless and immediate reports for the shutdown leadership team.

Our reports are intuitively laid out to give you a complete picture of what’s happening in your shutdown war room meetings or operational hubs.

For us who have lived and breathed in the dust, it is an exciting time to see part of our dream come to fruition… a fully innovative, intuitive and integrated shutdown management platform that helps you to digitally plan, execute and close-out your shutdown.

The possibilities are endless.

Ashkan Shahmir Brings SMSi to a Global Audience

Last month IMMS Managing Director Ashkan Shahmir presented at the Digital Shutdown & Turnaround Online Conference presented by Truventus.

Ashkan talked about the impact a digital platform can have on end-to-end management of shutdowns with case studies to create real-world examples for the conference attendees.

“Shutdowns struggling with an absence of clarity around their shutdown readiness, poor visual management and fluctuating shutdown performance will often suffer from overruns. This hurts the business as a whole. As a Shutdown Superintendent for many years, I know that struggle. The solution that SMSi provides is one where we standardise the whole process of the shutdown with enhanced visibility for management, team collaboration and a complete uplift in shutdown performance for the business.”

The digital space offers a unique opportunity for Shutdown teams to manage their shutdowns in a truly collaborative and innovative way.

When we transform the old paper-version of shutdown management we streamline the entire process. In fact, we can integrate an entire system into a single platform that’s beautifully designed and completely intuitive to the needs of the user.

Digital transformation doesn’t mean we’re using MS Excel in a cloud or sharing between users and experiencing cold sweats over version control… it means putting the entire shutdown process on a cloud-based platform that updates the work in real time.

This is why we say it’s a truly collaborative and innovative way to manage your shutdowns.

Held online, the conference attendees heard from speakers around the globe allowing for a truly unique and immersive conference experience.

We would like to thank Trueventus for inviting us to present and are looking forward to our next opportunity to bring our big ideas on how the digital environment can improve, enhance and innovate shutdowns across the world.

The possibilities are endless!

Shutdown readiness in COVID19: Challenges and solutions

There’s no playbook for the new challenges and risks that COVID is bringing to Shutdowns across the world right now.

When we enter a Shutdown, Turnaround, & Outage event we come at it with confidence because we put so much work into the readiness stage of the project.

But with COVID turning the tables on what we can do we’re suddenly having to come up with new ways to solve new problems.

Not all shutdown teams can be onsite and this is particularly difficult for remote sites when communication is no longer transparent simple. When management team is offsite this also slows things down and, as we know, when we lose momentum on work risk mitigation can start to fall through the cracks.

Rules imposed by local government can mean long quarantine times and long rosters. A long quarantine time means team members are excluded from the workflow and maybe even feeling isolated as they wait for their time to get started on work. Long rosters are a big risk particularly for fatigue management.

When we have a scattered work force with so many restrictions in place, the success of a project can depend on the ability for workers to be innovative in their approach to collaboration. Ask any seasoned Shutdown Superintendent and they will tell you that the better the teamwork in a shutdown, the more successful it will be every time.

Another problem with isolated team members is lack of visibility on the work as a whole. We can’t easily determine what’s needed and where the risks are when we can’t see all the pieces in the same place. If our team isn’t working together we’re creating silos and this is a very fast way to have a very bad shutdown.

It’s not all doom and gloom because we have some solutions for you!

1- Make sure you’ve established a strong readiness process and that you’re making sure to adjust to conditions and update the process as things change.

2- Make sure accountabilities and responsibilities are clearly defined and make sure the whole team completely understands their expectations at all times.

3- Upgrade your systems to that you’re able to operate collaboratively even when you’re remote. Communication must be transparent and team members must all have a reliable internet connection.

4- Be clear on your readiness KPIs and have them in a central place for everyone in the team to always have clarity on their stake in those KPIs

5- Actions are clear, easy to see, easy to understand and easily managed by the whole team. Transparency and clarity again is important, here.

6- An effective and strong leadership team will be best positioned to have access to all of the above in a single place to make sure they can have a clear understanding of the process, avoid micromanaging and drive success from a single vantage point.

Of course, if you’re looking for a tool that can do everything we’ve got you covered. SMSi is a digital platform that provides visual management for all readiness, execution and post-shutdown management phases.

It promotes clarity for management and team members with an innovative approach to task management and a dashboard that is intuitive to the needs of the user.

Plus we have an amazing team of developers that are always ready to take action on user feedback so the system can evolve as conditions, demands and workplace expectations change around the world daily.
